The Black of Pharmacists of ASHP is formed in San Antonio, Texas.

The Black of Pharmacists of ASHP holds it's first official business meeting and begins the tradition of an annual luncheon in Las Vegas, Nevada. The name of the organization is changed to the Association of Black Hospital Pharmacists (ABHP).
August 1983
Publication of the ABHP Newsletter, the first ABHP Newsletter. The Awards program is formed to recognize the outstanding achievements of pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists. Allen L. Brown is the first Chairperson of the Committee.
August 1984
ABHP holds first elections. First officers were John J. Scrivens, Jr. (President), Miriam Mobley-Smith (Vice-President for Administration), Theotus Butler (Vice President for Development), Sarah Sanders (Secretary), Frank S. Emanuel (Treasurer), and Georgia Thomas (Publicist).
March 1985
With the assistance of member Col. Samuel Shannon, ABHP gets 501 (C)(6) Tax Exempt status.
November 1985
The ABHP Newsletter wins the Indiana Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Bronze Quill Award in the category of Non-Profit Organizations.

The following Committees are formed: Membership Committee, Educational Affairs Committee, and Fund-raising Committee. ABHP participates in the first National Survey of Black Pharmacists.
April 16-18, 1986
ABHP presented its first international Symposium. The topic of symposium was "New Horizons in Cancer Chemotherapy: A Focus on Special Populations" in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
July - August 1990
ABHP participates in first National Pharmacy Summit in Orlando, Florida. The National Pharmaceutical Association hosted the summit. Other participating organizations included: the national pharmacy alumni associations of Howard University, Xavier University, Florida A&M University, and Texas Southern University. Dr. Louis P. Sullivan, Secretary of Health and Human Services was keynote speaker.

ABHP approves the formation of regional chapters.
July 13, 1996
The first of a series of region seminars is held in Washington, DC. Registrants were treated to 6 hours of continuing education on the subject of "Diabetes: A Serious Disease - An Excellent Opportunity to Provide Pharmaceutical Care."

The first annual Wendell T. Hill Award is presented to Dr. Arcelia Johnson-Fannin, Dean Hampton University, College of Pharmacy. The award, named in honor of the first African-American President of the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP), gives recognition to an individual who, through their dedication, interest and enthusiasm, has made significant contribution to the practice of pharmacy.

The first Allen L. Brown Cardiovascular Lecture is presented. Named in honor of one the ABHP's most admired charter member, the lecture series attempts to solicit recently completed research papers from pharmacy residents or undergraduate students focusing on healthcare disparities affecting minorities with emphasis on cardiovascular diseases.

On September 10, 2003, ABHP approves a new Mission and Vision Statement following their Strategic Planning Meeting in Tampa, FL
2004
ABHP becomes a charter member of the National African American Drug Policy Coalition (NAADPC). The Coalition is concerned with reciprocal cooperation in promoting more effective policies and practices to address the societal problem of drug abuse. The NAADPC is comprised of several professional organizational entities including, the National Bar Association, National Asociation of Black Sociologists, National Association of Black Psychologists, National Association of Black Social Workers, National Black Nurses Association, National Dental Association, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and others.

ABHP Executive Committee is invited and introduced at the ASHP Board of Diretors meeting.

ABHP members play an instrumental role in the passage of Health Disparities resolution in the ASHP House of Delegates.

On September 24-26, 2004, the ABHP organizes its first Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, Florida. The meeting was cancelled after the first day due to a mandatory evacuation caused by hurricane Jeanne.

ABHP adopts its new Bylaws

ABHP holds its second Annual Meeting, May 20-22, 2005 in Coral Gables, Florida. The them of the conference was Identifying and Addressing Unique Opportunities for Patient Care. Topics addressed included health care disparities, cultural competence, and health literacy.

ABHP signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the ASHP. The purpose of the MOU is to set forth the undestanding between ASHP and ABHP regarding joint collaboration on issues and projects of mutal interest which would advance pharmacy practice in hospital and health systems.
July 2006
ABHP forms the first Joint Committee with the ASHP as a result of the signing of the MOU with ASHP. The goal of the committee is to oversee and develop activities of mutual interest which would advance pharmacy practice in the health systems.
August 2006
ABHP signs a partnership agreement with ASHP Advantage, a business arm of the ASHP, to develop and manage activities of the 2007 ABHP Annual Meeting. The conference was listed for the first time and the ABHP Minority Helath Conference and Annual Meeting.

ABHP holds the third Minority Health Conference and Annual Meeting, May 16-18, 2008, in Atlanta, GA. The conference was managed by ASHP Advantages.

The ABHP Board of Directors approves a joint Leadership Award with the ASHP, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in efforts to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health care. The award was created in a collaborative effort of the ABHP – ASHP Joint Committee.

The Board of Directors of the ABHP and ASHP approves the renewal of the joint Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two organizations. The purpose of this MOU is to set forth the understanding between ASHP and ABHP regarding joint collaboration on issues and projects of mutual interest which would advance pharmacy practice in hospitals and health systems. Proposed areas for mutual collaboration included the promotion of minority health and health disparities to members thru minority health resources, research award and recognition. The approval follows the collaborative recommendation from the ABHP-ASHP Joint Committee, which is the liaison group between the two organizations.

The ABHP recently announced it’s position in a Statement of Key Principles of Health Care Reform. The statement comes as a response to the Obama Administration's plans for Healthcare Reform as well as those created by other medical, nursing, and pharmacy organizations. There are numerous issues that have been addressed quite successfully within the plans. The ABHP has developed an addendum to these plans, which outlines the role of the pharmacist in mounting a successful attack on healthcare disparities in a cost-effective and patient-centered way. The statement has also been endorsed by the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA).

The ABHP notifies the Obama Administration of the important role of all pharmacists, including minority pharmacists, in mounting a successful attack on healthcare disparities in a cost-effective and patient-centered way. Through meetings and written memorandum, the Association encourages the Obama administration, key legislators, and the American public, to realize these benefits that the pharmacists bring to the health care system.

The ABHP Board of Directors approved the name change of one its awards to the John J. Scrivens, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. The Award gives recognition to an individual who gives significant sustained service to the ABHP. Dr. Scrivens has been an active member of the ABHP since it started in 1978 has given significant and sustained service to the ABHP as an officer for more than 10 years. He continues to serve as an active member of the ABHP Awards Committee and Nominations Committee. The Award name is changed to honor a pharmacist with many of the qualities brilliantly exemplified by Dr. John J. Scrivens, Jr. , who currently serves as Director, Pharmacy Practice Division, Florida A&M University, College of Pharmacy, Tampa, Florida.

The Association of Black Health-system Pharmacists (ABHP) honors the noted Senator and pharmacist from Texas, George “Mickey” Leland, by changing the name of its Legislative Achievement Award to the Mickey Leland Political Achievement Award. The Mickey Leland Political Achievement Award will recognize an individual, a team of individuals, or an organization that has performed special service in state or national political and legislative affairs that strengthen, improve, and further the interests of the ABHP and pharmacists in general. This award will be given to those individuals who best personify the spirit of Mickey Leland and whose work will have a significant impact on the community at large. Mickey Leland graduated from Texas Southern University (TSU) School of Pharmacy in 1970. While attending TSU, Leland became a vocal leader of the civil rights movement and continued to be a champion for the poor and the disempowered through out his brilliant political career. He strongly believed that the poor, the hungry, and the less fortunate should have equal access to health care and fought strongly for legislative change long before it was called health care reform. In a communication with his wife, Mrs. Alison Leland, she stated, “Mickey was very proud of being a pharmacist and healthcare was his passion. It is an honor to have this award named for him.”
