Roderick D. Perkins

Dr. Chisholm-Burns, I hope you are well. I am the father of an African American Female who is a Senior in a Suburban Birmingham, Al High School. She is interested in Pharmacy. She has been accepted to Mercer University, Ole Miss, Auburn and shortly Samford University and has applied to Xavier. All have good Phmarcy Programs. She participated in a summer Pharmacy Camp at Samford University. I have attempted to get her an Internship/Job Shadow opportunity in the Pharmacy. However, I was told that was not possible becasue of State Laws which prohibit someone under 18 years old from doing an Intern or Job Shadow particularly in the Pharmacy Field. I presume becasue of potential liability issues. My question is how do we expose, really expose, African Americans to the world of Pharmacy so they can have “inside” knowledge prior to taking their first College Pharmacy Course. Oftentimes, our students are exposed to certain information for the very first time while sitting in a college level class while their counterparts have been exposed to the same information for years. Please advise.

Your cooperation and assistance is greatly appreciated.
